From my own experience I know that even the most well-groomed dense lawn is able to present unpleasant surprises. Repair work is carried out in a certain sequence. I'll tell you everything in order.

The main stages of lawn care in the spring
The two-year-old rolled and planted green carpet are similar in structure. Density is largely dependent on the type of grass.
Parquet lawns often require restoration, mixtures for urban lawns are more stable.
When open areas of land appear, you need to sow the lawn mixture again. For these purposes, it is advisable to purchase a seed mixture with a margin. She has germination up to 7 years. The rest is standard care:
- leveling the site;
- cleaning from the remnants of dry grass and leaves, if a lot of felt has accumulated at the base, remove it, the procedure is called stratification;
- top dressing;
- enrichment of roots with oxygen (aeration).
Rolling and combing
First of all, you need to evaluate whether rolling is needed. It is carried out when the soil dries up 5 centimeters deep, an early load can harm the grass. To scatter the remaining snow, it is better to go through the lags - I throw wide boards. When after the repair there were scraps of laminate lamellas, I began to use them, very convenient!
Rolling is performed in several cases:
- when bumps bulge above the ground;
- moles or earthen rats made moves;
- seed was planted in autumn; soil needs to be compacted;
- the site is uneven, puddles are formed.
After rolling, the soil is leveled, compacted. If you use a special roller, the grass will not suffer.
While there was no magazine roller, I used pipe scraps for these purposes, it is easy to fix it with wire. The first two or three years it is advisable to necessarily roll the lawn. A dense lawn forms an even turf.
The best tool for giving with a lawn - a fan rake. They are good at raking not only dry blades of grass from the lawn, but also mulch. It is especially needed for young lawns and in places where winters are not snowy. Ordinary garden rakes with sharp teeth are not suitable for lawns, they will pick grass, believe me, shreds are solid.

There is a certain combing technique: the lawn runs first along, then across. For the best result, an additional diagonal combing is practiced. I pick up a rake as soon as the earth dries. Then the young grass will climb together.
Verticulation or scarification
The procedure for cleaning the top layer of turf is carried out as necessary, when the fine grass accumulated at the roots begins to interfere with the plants. On a lawn sown with cereal crops, we remove felt two years later on the third. Specially bought a nozzle in the form of a drum with vertical knives cutting sod. The tool is called a verticutter or a scarifier.

Mechanical scarification is best done before raking the lawn. When every year a good green carpet is combed after each haircut with a trimmer, the need for scarification will disappear. We cut the top layer of turf to improve air access.
Sanding
If necessary, sanding is carried out on heavy soils — lowlands or the entire area of the lawn are covered with river sand or light soil, in which sod is quickly formed (compost soil is mixed with sand in a 1: 1 ratio).
Sanitary treatment
Diseases on the lawn develop when there is not enough iron. Spring treatment with iron sulfate is recommended, especially in flooded areas and after prolonged floods. Gazontrel, Lontrel, and Magnum are saved from weeds by special preparations. Herbicide treatment must be carried out with gloves, a respirator. On the first quiet evening it is better to immediately spray the lawn, if there is a thistle, euphorbia. From the ubiquitous dandelions, a folk remedy, boiling water, helps well.
Scalping sprouts after emergence eliminates flowers.
They recommend burning dandelions with a blowtorch, sprinkling slices with salt or citric acid. Frankly, I have not tried these methods. Dandelions poured boiling water along the fence even my grandmother, specially for this, drowned the bath.
Spring aeration and lawn mowing
Instead of digging, aerate the lawn - pierce the earth to a depth of 15 to 25 cm. For work use:
- Forks, they are stuck to the full depth, slightly swing, transferred to a new place. So pass the entire site. Friends gave us special tubular forks - instead of the teeth in the cross-section, we welded pieces of stainless tube cut at the bottom at an angle of at least 45 degrees. A very convenient thing, in the spring it removes the soil from excess moisture.
- Drum aerator dotted with sharp large spikes. It is inconvenient for them to process small lawns; they are convenient for a large, even green carpet. If you decide to make a drum yourself, you need to correctly calculate the load so that the spikes stick into the soil under the weight of the drum.
- I heard about sandals-aerators - overlays for shoes, they are fixed with straps or ropes. They put on such shoes, mince on the lawn, and loosen.
Spring aeration is carried out annually. If the soil is heavy, loosening the sod is carried out several times during the season.
The first cut of grass is carried out when it rises by 10 centimeters, we cut it in half. We noticed that the first timely cut increases the density of growth.
It should be borne in mind that there is no standard norm for grass height; it depends on the type of mixtures planted. The growth rate of the lawn also varies. By the way, cutting is carried out when the grass is dry.
Watering the lawn
During the existence of the lawn on our site, I learned: the more grass grows, the less water it needs. Young plantings, roll lawns moisturize every three days. It is convenient if there is an irrigation system. If it is not, use an ordinary hose. The jet under pressure is well sprayed if the hose is partially blocked by a finger. Sprinkling is not carried out on sunny days, burns appear on the grass.

It is better to moisten the soil in the early morning or late afternoon when there is no direct sunlight. Watering at dusk is fraught with the development of fungal infections. At night, fog appears over the grass, held until sunrise. True, abundant dew falls in the morning, but the risk of root rot in some types of grass increases significantly.
How and what to fertilize the lawn in spring
In the spring, nitrogen fertilizing is desirable, it stimulates the growth of green mass. Urea, ammonium phosphate, or ammonium nitrate are added at the rate of 20 g (matchbox) per square meter. Later, it is better after the first cut, phosphorus, potassium, calcium are added in a ratio of 2: 1: 1.

Work by month
The calendar is indicative, compiled for the suburbs. In other regions of the middle lane, in the Urals, in Siberia, dates are shifted depending on weather conditions.
