The generous Shchadrya cherry variety was created specifically for cultivation in the harsh Ural and Siberian climates. This cherry is stunted, winter-hardy, self-fertile and undemanding to care for.
Generous hardy cherries
The generous cherry variety was bred by Sverdlovsk breeders in the middle of the last century by hybridizing ordinary and steppe shrub cherries.
As a legacy from the steppe cherries, the Generous variety received short stature and high winter hardiness, and from the ordinary - yield and juiciness of fruits.
Generous Cherry is a spreading bushes up to 2 meters high, widely spreading to the sides due to the abundant formation of root shoots. This variety is partially self-fertile, which is a rarity for cherries, and can be a good pollinator for other varieties. It blooms in the second half of May.
The fruits are medium-sized, weighing up to 3-4 grams, dark red, juicy, sweet and sour, taste from mediocre to good. Suitable for fresh consumption and for all methods of home canning. They ripen late and stretched from mid-August to September. Fruiting annually from 3-4 years, yield up to 4-5 kilograms per bush.
Variety Generous is zoned for the Urals, Western Siberia and the Volga-Vyatka region.
In Tatarstan, Generous Cherry is sometimes grown in the gardens of the eastern part of the republic, where the climate is more continental than on the Volga. This cherry grows well in neighboring Bashkiria.

Features of planting and cultivation of generous cherries
As a descendant of the steppe cherry, it grows best on dry sunny slopes and does not tolerate waterlogged acidic soils. In the Urals and Siberia, cherries are planted only in spring, from late April to mid-May.
Planting cherries - step by step instructions
Generous is a compact bush variety, so 2-3 meters between adjacent bushes will be quite enough. Procedure:
- Dig a hole with a depth of 50-60 centimeters and a diameter of 50 centimeters on light sandy soils to 1 meter on heavy clay.
- Add 1-2 buckets of rotted compost and 1 glass of ash to the ground from the pit, and 1-2 buckets of coarse-grained sand for clay soil. Mix well.
- Pour a little of this mixture into the pit.
- Spread the roots of the seedling and place it in the pit so that the root neck is 2-3 centimeters above the soil level.
- Cover the roots with fertilized soil.
- Gently pour a bucket of water under the seedling.
In order for the bush cherry to be durable, it is necessary to plant it with root-own seedlings obtained from the shoots. Such plants with timely rejuvenation can live 20-30 years or more, forming a wide multi-stem bush from shoots of different ages. Young seedlings do not need pruning until the shoots appear. From this moment it is necessary to monitor the bush, timely cutting weak, dried and too old trunks near the ground. A properly formed cherry bush should be well ventilated and illuminated by the sun.
How to protect cherries from pests and diseases
Generous Cherries are affected by moderate coccomycosis and moniliosis. Of the pests, aphids and mucous sawflies are common.
