The summer season is approaching. In the warm season, more and more people prefer to live outside the city, in nature. And this means that you need to consider not only your life, but also the interior, in which you will spend part of spring, summer and the warm beginning of autumn. Perhaps the curtain to the cottage, sewn with your own hands from an inexpensive, but practical fabric, will be the beginning of the renovation of your summer home.

What should be country curtains?

Of course, country curtains should be pleasing to the eye and match the place for which they are intended. But there are several more parameters that should be considered when choosing "clothes" for the windows of suburban housing.

It’s not at all necessary to sew luxurious curtains to give, because this is a country house in which everything should be simple, cute and functional

Here's what you need to pay special attention to:

  • It is better to give preference to natural materials such as linen, cotton and chintz.
  • Curtains should be practical. They should not quickly fade and get dirty very much.
  • The choice of fabrics for windows also depends on their location. For windows facing the sunny side, we choose dense curtains made of dark matter, and for windows oriented to the shaded side, we will leave light and light fabrics.
  • If you live in the country all year round, you need to get another set of curtains - winter.
  • Do not overload the model with numerous frills and decorative elements. Simple and sweet is our motto.
  • For a veranda or a gazebo, it is better to choose a material that does not allow water to pass - PVC fabrics.

And also pay attention to the fact that country curtains should be easily removable, therefore, rings or clothespins should be used as fasteners for them.

In this case, light and cute curtains are fixed on the curtain rod with the help of rings and clothespins: removing them is simple

We sew country curtains in different styles

The style, which is most often preferred by summer residents, is called "rustic". It is popular not only in our country, but also in Europe, and even in America. It’s just that in different countries it acquires its own characteristic distinguishing features.

Patchwork in the Russian spirit

To embody the Russian village style, we need the simplest natural fabric. Usually it is a "funny" chintz, linen or cotton. Plain matter, and with a fine pattern, will do. The curtain made by the patchwork method looks great.

Patchwork curtains look very elegant, despite the fact that they can be sewn from both new fabric and shreds left over from other works

To sew curtains from flaps, you need to measure the window, decide on the parameters of the paintings of the future curtain, and then make a pattern of its details. In this case, preference should be given to large elements, so that the curtains are not too heavy due to the abundance of seams. The patchwork technique involves the use of geometric shapes. Most often these are isosceles triangles or squares. The combination of dark and light details looks most effective.

For the future patchwork fabric, it is necessary to make a pattern on thick paper or cardboard, carefully numbing all the details

We cut out parts from thick cardboard without allowances for seams and number them so as not to get confused when connecting. We apply patterns to the wrong side of the material and circle them around the outline with a shallow, remnant or a special marker. Each element will be cut with allowance for seams — approximately 0.5 cm. In order for the seam to be on the wrong side of the work, the parts must be joined by attaching them to each other with their front sides.

Sew on a sewing machine or manually made seams. To hide the wrong side of the product, it needs a lining. The edges of the resulting curtains can be decorated with braid, lace or ribbons.

Curtains in the Russian rustic style make out not only window, but also doorways, as well as a sleeping place.

We embody the French rustic style

The rustic style in France was named after one of the provinces of this country. Namely Provence. To create this style, chintz is also quite suitable, and you can also use flax and even a cambric. All these fabrics are natural and will serve well in the country.

When choosing fabrics, you can give preference to plain fabrics of blue, blue, lavender and white colors or use material with a pattern

In addition to fabric and a sewing machine, for work we need:

  • Hardware. Satin ribbons and threads to match the tone of one of the colors of the main material are well suited to decorate the product.
  • Tools and material. We will prepare paper for the pattern, a centimeter tape, chalk or remnant, pins and very sharp scissors.

It is better to buy a fabric with a margin of 10-15% in case of possible measurement errors. The minimum width of the fabric should be 3 meters.

Be sure to measure the window and adjust the sizes proposed below, based on the results of our measurements. We have to sew a simple version of curtains in the style of Provence from two halves with a transverse strip. The width of each half is approximately 80 cm, and the transverse strip is 15-20 cm.

Despite the apparent simplicity of the work, it should begin with a pattern. To do this, double-folded paper is placed on a large table or on the floor. We draw the contours of future paintings in half their actual size and cut them out.

When transferring the pattern to the fabric, do not forget to make allowances for the seams. In the upper part of the product, which will be attached to the cornice using clothespins, the allowance should be at least 5 cm. For the remaining seams, it is enough to leave 1 cm.

In the details cut out of the fabric, we pin the edges to be sewn with pins so that the seams are even and neat. After that, we decorate the edges with a ribbon, and then we assemble the finished curtains in the Provence style.

An attic in the Provence style looks very elegant, although simple. There is a lot of light, a huge window decorated with a flowing translucent curtain

Do not forget the hooks that hold the curtains when they are pulled apart. They can be made of pieces of fabric from curtains or in the form of decorative cords, ribbons, flowers.

We sew curtains in the style of American country

Like any other rustic style, country is characterized by simplicity and naturalness.

For country, natural fabrics are most often chosen:

  • not too bright;
  • with flower pattern;
  • in the box".

However, you can use synthetics that mimic natural fabric. Its advantages for giving are that it will not fade, will not turn yellow from the sun, will not shrink, and will not rumple.

To correctly calculate the need for material, we make the necessary measurements. To determine the length of the product, you need to measure the distance from the cornice (the upper point of the curtain) to the windowsill or the bottom of the heating battery (lower point). We add 6 cm to the result for bending the product from below and 3 cm for the turn in the upper part of the canvas. To determine the width of the product, you need to increase the length of the cornice by 1.5-2 times, depending on the density of the upcoming drapery.

This is what the curtains we sew will look like. The only difference is that these are not attached to the cornice with the help of braid, but with decorative loops

The simplest pattern is rectangular canvases. Cut the fabric. In order not to use pins, you can set the sewing machine to the long stitch mode. It allows you to notice the hem. To the bent upper edge we sew on the tape for curtains. Next, the side seams should be processed. The edges of the braid should be removed in the seam, and the ends of the cords should be left outside. By pulling them, it will be possible to adjust the degree of drapery of the curtain. It remains only to process the bottom and hang the finished curtains on the ledge.

Features of a rustic style for different rooms

The rustic style is universal and very suitable for a summer residence, therefore, all rooms can be decorated in it, taking into account their features.

We sew Roman curtains for the kitchen

The most relevant design for kitchen curtains is called cafe curtains. A rod, fishing line or twine is fixed in the middle of the window. Two small canvases are strengthened on it. The upper part of the window is decorated with a lambrequin or curtains with pick-ups.

Another option that will organically look in the country kitchen is Roman curtains.

To create Roman curtains, large pieces of fabric are not needed: you can do with a rag, which is enough only to cover the opening

If your cottage has these rooms, then decorate them with long rustic-style curtains, with pick-ups. As an additional decoration of the panels, you can use lace or fabric frills, satin ribbons, cords, buttons and beads.

Sewing curtains in the Mediterranean style

Another style that summer residents love to choose is Mediterranean.

Characteristic features of it can be called the following:

  • the abundance of light in the rooms;
  • large windows;
  • translucent or fully transparent fabrics are preferred;
  • The fabrics should be plain or with floral ornaments.

We will prepare all the necessary materials for work:

  • the fabric that we have chosen taking into account all the recommendations given above;
  • scissors for fabric;
  • centimeter tape or tape measure;
  • pins and needles, threads;
  • sewing machine.

To sew the curtains for the cottage with your own hands, it is necessary to make preliminary measurements, which we will subsequently be guided by when cutting the fabric.

Two-piece curtains

To get started, you can simply attach the selected fabric to the window, check the location of the picture and how the finished curtain will look in the interior. We measure the width of the window. We need twice as much tissue as the obtained measurement value. That is, for a two-meter window, you will need four meters of material.

Orange and other warm colors of transparent or translucent curtains are characteristic of the Italian direction of a sunny and cheerful Mediterranean style

We determine the length of the future product, making a measurement from the point where the upper edge of the panel will be fixed, to the level of the desired length. When calculating the parameters of the product, be sure to add 15-20 cm to the seams, the hem and the part of the paintings that will be fixed to the cornice. Cut the fabric better by spreading it on the floor or on a large table. If the curtains will consist of two paintings, then we fold the product in half width and carefully cut along the length.

Stages of creating simple curtains: cutting fabric on the floor, fixing bends with pins, distributing and fixing folds in the upper part of the fabric, working with a sewing machine

On all sides of the panels, except for the upper edge, we make hemings, fixing them with pins. The sketches made are sewn on a typewriter. Now the canvas looks neat. We bend the upper edge to the wrong side, fix with pins and sew. From the outside of the seam can be hidden with braid. The hem obtained from above is used for fixing on the cornice. Now from the improvised material we master the tricks.

A more complex model can be stitched using the diagram below.

The best part about this circuit is that the specific dimensions are given. And this means that by measuring your window, you can recalculate the circuit data in accordance with the actual parameters

Beautiful arch curtain

You can decorate the window opening in the kitchen, and in any other room with an arch. Everywhere she will look surprisingly organic and gentle. You can sew an arch from a whole piece of fabric. This should be a piece large enough so that the ends of the arch hang down to the windowsill or even lower.

The advantage of this option can be considered that when cutting there is less waste: the arch turns out expressive and beautiful

Two methods can be used to create an arched shape of such a curtain.

  • The arc can be cut at the bottom of the canvas. The edge of the arch must be treated with an oblique trim; you can even decorate it with ruffle. The upper part of the arch fits into oncoming folds.
  • In the second method, not one, but two arcs are cut. The upper arc along section B is stretched, a special tape is sewn to it for fastenings to the cornice. The fabric, cut along the oblique, hangs beautifully, forming soft folds. The edge of the arch runs along the lower arc. Sheathed, decorated with ruffle if desired.

This option is good because beautiful folds on the arch are obtained in a natural way, based on the cutting technique itself

For clarity, we suggest you watch a video on the creation of curtain arches:

As you can see, no special skill is needed in order to sew the curtains for giving. But it is curtains, selected with taste, that transform the interior before our eyes, give it completeness. In the country, you will spend at least three months. Create an atmosphere of coziness and comfort.
